Weeping
Diane Gage
Sometimes luxurious
sometimes painful
somehow feminine
even when a soldier
does it, or an elephant,
a tree, a low sky.
Earth stands ready
to receive each drop
and freshet, clean it
of meaning, recycle
sweet and salt alike.
Softness ensues,
stones slowly melt,
even bones relax
in this wet surrender
to the laws of loss.
Let’s lie down now
and forgive one another.
