when the world FIRST OPENED ITS DOORS?

Ann Iverson

    When the world
    First opened its doors
    We waited in silence.

    Once inside
    We gazed out windows.

    We saw:

    Leaves dancing
In their orange and yellow circles

    Snow falling in complicated squares,
    Ocean roaring a tided message.

When the world first opened its doors

    We saw:
    Mountains to climb
    Deserts to bear
    Wars to endure
    Rivers to swim

    We saw darkness.
    We saw light.

    We opened the windows
    To let air in
    We began to breathe.
